William “Charlie” Charles Mortensen, 77, of Whiting, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Unity Point Health- St. Lukes Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa.
A funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 6, 2024, at the Whiting Christian Church, Whiting, Iowa, with Pastor Jed Shermer, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Charlie’s obituary. A luncheon will follow the funeral service at the church. Burial will follow in the Whiting City Cemetery, Whiting, Iowa, with Masonic Rites led by: Steve Jewett, orator. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Coast Guard and the Emery-Johnson American Legion Post #481 of Whiting, Iowa. A visitation will be 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the Whiting Christian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Charlie was born September 13, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of William and Joan (Richardson) Mortensen. He graduated from Sioux City Central High School. Charlie proudly served in the United States Coast Guard July 1, 1966, and was honorably discharged on December 23, 1970.
Charlie and Catherine “Cathy” Nosal were united in marriage on July 27, 1991, in San Antonio, Texas.
He worked as a police officer in Denver, Colorado. Charlie then operated and owned Charlie’s Malt Shop and the Cross Shop in Whiting, Iowa. He also worked at Sam’s Club as a Market Membership Representative for over eighteen years.
Charlie enjoyed golfing, fishing, and visiting with his family. He loved his favorite doggies, Puddles, Stormy, and Buddy. Charlie enjoyed playing guitar and singing and was the founding member of the Mustangs Band. He was in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in Okoboji, Iowa. Charlie went on tour with the Beach Boys.
He was a member of the Whiting Christian Church, the Weston Lodge No. 562 A.F. & A.M. of Whiting, Iowa, Abu Bekr Shriners, VFW, and the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce. Charlie led the Celebrate Recovery meetings in Whiting, Iowa, for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy Mortensen of Whiting, Iowa; children, Lisa (Trapper) Short of Mobile, Alabama, and Eric (Michelle) Mortensen of Birmingham, Alabama; grandchildren, Michael Lee of Mobile, Alabama, and Brittany Lee of Mobile, Alabama; great-grandchild, Emma Kate Lee; and other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” and Joan (Richardson) Mortensen; paternal and maternal grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.
