William “Bill” or “Red” Johnson of Sloan, Iowa passed away on his 87th birthday on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his family.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 20, 2026 at the Community Church of Christ in Sloan, Iowa, with Pastor Kody Killian and Dr. Emery Killian, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Bill’s obituary. Lunch and fellowship will follow the service at the church. Burial will take place at 12:30 P.M. at the Sloan Cemetery, Sloan, Iowa with Military Honors provided by the United States Air Force and Smith-Rhodes American Legion Post #295 of Sloan, Iowa. A visitation will be a half hour before the service on Friday, March 20, 2026 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
William Charles was born March 12, 1939 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Charles “Chuck” and Catherine “Katie” (Jensen) Johnson. He grew up in Sloan and graduated from Sloan High School with the Class of 1957. Following high school, Bill continued his education at Iowa State University. He later enlisted in the Air National Guard, where he served as an air technician—working as a mechanic on airplanes—and served in Vietnam. Bill dedicated a total of thirty-three years to his service.
Bill Johnson and Sharon Kay Copple were united into marriage on October 11, 1963, in Sloan, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Betsy and Marty.
Bill worked for IPS now known as Mid-American for nearly fifteen years until his retirement. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodcarving, and singing at weddings and funerals. Bill also found great fulfillment in volunteering at Pleasant View Care Center, in Whiting, Iowa. For the annual Pleasant View Pie Auctions, Bill and his wife, Sharon, made their famous caramels that everyone fought over at the auction.
Bill was a member of the Community Church of Christ in Sloan.
Survivors include his children, Betsy Johnson of Sloan, Iowa, and Marty Johnson of Sloan, Iowa; brother, James “Rusty” Johnson and Lynne of Texas; sister, Marilyn Lewis of Sloan, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Renee Johnson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Carol Johnson of Virginia, Kathy (Bob) Gay of Sloan, Iowa, Berta Kelley of Sioux City, Iowa, Bev Copple of Sloan, Iowa, Twila Copple of Sloan, Iowa and Vicky Copple of Sioux City, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chuck and Katie (Jensen) Johnson; parents-in-law, Ira and Leta “Tootsie” (Gulick) Copple; wife, Sharon Johnson; brothers, Harold “LeRoy” Johnson and David Johnson; brothers-in-law, Benny Copple, Jack Copple, Ronnie Copple and Gil Copple; and two sisters-in-law, Janet (Larry) VanAuken and Sally (Don) Maddox.
