Thomas “Tom” Ival Shook, 81, of Onawa, Iowa and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away suddenly Saturday, December 10, 2022, at his residence in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A Memorial Service will be 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, Onawa, Iowa, with Dr. Emery Killian, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Tom’s obituary. Burial will follow at Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with Military Honors provided by the United States Air Force and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Thomas Ival was born January 25, 1941, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Ival and Mary (Ping) Shook. He graduated from Onawa, Iowa, with the class of 1959, where he was a former Bulldog. After, high school Tom attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
Tom served in the United States Air Force from November 25, 1959 and was honorably discharged August 23, 1963. He was an active member in the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa.
Tom and Elaine Rose were united into marriage June 18, 1965. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska for two years before moving to Onawa in 1967. Tom worked for People’s Natural Gas in Onawa, Iowa for several years. Elaine passed away on August 16, 2012.
Tom was a business partner with Arvid “Junior” Hanson and together they owned S & H Drilling for thirty-three years. Tom operated the plumbing and heating side of the business for many years in Onawa.
Tom enjoyed being in the outdoors by working, golfing, hunting, mushroom hunting, and fishing. Tom also enjoyed playing cribbage. He was a past member of the Eagles Club, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, city council, and bowling league for many years. In his spare time he loved to spend time at the cabin on the river with grandkids and his lab retriever dogs.
Survivors include his significant other, Nancy Kennedy of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; daughter, Julee (Lee Kirkpatrick, Sr.) Shook of Onawa, Iowa; grandchildren, Austin, Dawson, and Shylee Kirkpatrick; two sisters, Joan (Joe Burgess) Allen of Waite Park, Minnesota and Nancy (Steve) Ost of Onawa, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Anita Schelm of Mapleton, Iowa, and Betty (Bob) Halterman of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; brother-in-law, Larry Johnson of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; uncle, Dick (Marlene) Ping of Onawa, Iowa; good friend, Glenda Alexander of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Shook; parents, Ival and Mary Shook; and son, Jeff Shook.
