Rosalie Ruth (Irish) Torticill, 95 years old, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 12, 2022 at CHI Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa following a courageous battle with heart disease.
Rosalie was born on May 9, 1927 near Glenwood, Iowa, the daughter of Claude Clement and Ona Mae (Kidder) Irish. She was one of 13 children. The family moved to Salix, Iowa and she graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Salix with the class of 1945. William (Bill) Edward Torticill fell in love with the ‘girl in the pink sweater’ and they were united in marriage on August 16, 1945 in Salix. Nine children were born to this union whose names all began with the letter D (Diann, Debby, Delane, Dennis, Dannette, Denise, Doreen, David and Dawn.) Rosalie and Bill celebrated their fifty-third wedding anniversary before Bill passed away on June 15, 1999.
Rosalie was not only beautiful, she was an accomplished artist, baker & cook. She was known for her immense decorated cookies, fudge, cakes, cinnamon rolls, popcorn balls, chicken and noodles & potato soup. She owned and operated Rosalie’s Shoppe in Onawa for several years where she taught classes in painting plaster ware & silk flower decorating. The kids loved the video games and treats. She loved oil painting especially wildlife and roses. She was an expert seamstress and designed & sewed her daughters’ clothes including their prom and wedding dresses. She was their wedding designer and planner making exquisite beaded gowns, veils, wedding cakes and silk flower arrangements. Her gift of art could be found in everything she touched. She also enjoyed doll collecting, antiquing, boating, waterskiing, writing poems and gardening. She was a den leader for the Cub and Boy Scouts (Den 50) and especially loved doing the decorations for the Blue & Gold Banquets. She was proud of the row of trees that her den planted at Blue Lake that still exist. Right up until her death, she had an amazing memory. Her sense of humor and stories endeared her to all.
Her greatest joy was for her family which grew from her nine children to 26 grandchildren, 27 great- grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren with another on the way. She loved her cat, Chloe.
In addition to her family, religion was very important to Rosalie. She was a devout member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Onawa including the Rosary Society for many years.
