Richard "Rich" Sulsberger

Richard A. Sulsberger, age 75, of Warsaw, Missouri passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Warsaw Health and Rehabilitation Center in Warsaw.  He was born on September 13, 1945 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Alvin and Leah (Metcalf) Sulsberger.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Willow Township Cemetery, rural Holly Springs, Iowa with Rev. Jenny Jackson, officiating. A recording of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Rich’s obituary. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy and the Hindman-Steele American Legion Post #492, of Hornick, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

He grew up in Holly Springs, Iowa and was united in marriage to Catherine Prince at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa on February 20, 1964 while he was on leave from his naval service.  After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1965, they made their home in Holly Springs, Iowa where he ran the family farm; growing corn, soybeans and raising cattle and hogs.  He also operated a crop-dusting business for many years, despite being color blind.  He was also a member of the Hindman-Steele American Legion Post #492, of Hornick, Iowa. In 1989, they decided to move to Warsaw where they opened the Hillbilly Quick Sak Convenience Store and Fishing Guide.  After selling the operation, Rich went back to school to become a Respiratory Therapist.

Rich was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, fisherman and woodworker.  Rich would always have a story to tell about a fish that got away, or one that was a few sizes bigger than others may remember.  For many years, Rich lived and worked side by side with his wife and family.  After Rich and Cathy retired, they spent their time traveling to see family and friends.  He and his guys took many trips to Canada to fish and these were trips he really enjoyed.  Anybody who got to know Rich probably has a story they remember fondly because he was hard to forget.  He was loved by many and will be missed by more.

He is survived by: two daughters, Lisa Jackson, and her husband Rick, and Cher Miller and her husband Jeremy; one son, Steven Sulsberger and his wife Jacque all of Warsaw, Missouri; sister-in-law, Bernie Sulsberger of Moville, Iowa; five grandchildren, Dr. Austin Jackson and his wife Rev. Jenny Jackson of Topeka, Kansas, Matthew Jackson of Warsaw, Missouri, Ethan (Sabrina) Sulsberger of Belton, Missouri, Alex Sulsberger and Leah Catherine Miller, both of Warsaw; 4 great-grandsons; 2 great-granddaughters; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy; his mother, Leah; his father, Alvin; a sister, Shardell (Sulsberger) Reynders; and brother, Gary Sulsberger (who passed February 25, 2025).
