Richard "Dick" Ruttkay Obituary

Richard “Dick” E. Ruttkay, 85, of Onawa, Iowa, passed peacefully away Sunday, March 3, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Onawa, Iowa. Interment will be held in Graceland Cemetery, Howard, South Dakota. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Dick was born January 2, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois at the Lion Inn Hospital, the son of Ivan and Elsie (Noren) Ruttkay.  Dick grew upon a farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin. Dick attended Chicago Technical Trade School for hydronics and engineering.

Dick and Sally Rose Martin were united in marriage on July 6, 1958, in Sioux City, Iowa. Together they raised nine children (3 boys and 6 girls), James, Bradley, Daniel, Marla, LeAnn, Shawna, Elizabeth, Janene, and Dawn.

Dick owned his own Janitorial business, worked as an engineer at Swift, Dakota Pork and, Sioux City School System. He was very proud of his strong work ethic.

Dick had the opportunity to travel the world with his patient and loving wife Sally. Dick also enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren, couples league bowling where he was known as “Tricky Dick”, and he enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers and the Boston Celtics play. He spent his later years relaxing on his patio with his family while watching and feeding the birds and fishing in Blue Lake, Onawa, Iowa. Dick loved debating politics and anyone that disagreed with his views were greeted with “oh that’s bullsh$t.” 

Survivors include his wife, Sally Ruttkay of Onawa, Iowa; brother Ronald Ruttkay of Downers Grove, Illinois; his children, Bradley (Teri) Ruttkay of Sioux City, Iowa, Daniel (Paula) Ruttkay of Sioux City, Iowa, Marla (Lynn) Patrick of Fort Meyers, Florida, LeAnn (Michael) Carter of Hinton, Iowa, Shawna (Randy) Scofield of Sioux City, Iowa, Elizabeth (Jerry “Dean”) Graves of Sioux City, Iowa, Janene Ruttkay of Sioux City, Iowa, and Dawn (Todd) Langhoff of Mount Pleasant, Texas; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Elsie (Noren) Ruttkay; a son, James Ruttkay; grandsons, Joshua Patrick, and Devin Graves; great-grandson, David Angel Lozano; and a sister, Delores Gorup.
