Norman E. Westergaard, 89, of Albaton, Iowa passed away Thursday, May 14, 2026 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa, surrounded by his family.
A memorial service will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 22, 2026 at the Skien Lutheran Church, Albaton, Iowa with Reverend Richard Moore, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Norman’s obituary. Burial will follow in the Fairview Township Cemetery, Albaton, Iowa with Military Honors provided by the Smith-Rhodes American Legion Post #295 of Sloan, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Thursday, May 21, 2026 at the church with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Norman Eugene Westergaard was born on August 20, 1936, to Walter and Mildred (Johnson) Westergaard at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa. He lived on a farm near Whiting, Iowa, from 1936 to 1945. Norman was baptized and confirmed at Old Country Swedish Covenant Church in Sloan. He began attending Whiting Grade School in 1941 and moved with his parents to Sloan in 1945 while in the third grade. He graduated from Sloan High School in 1954.
During high school, Norman played both baseball and basketball and later managed Little League baseball teams. He continued playing baseball and fast-pitch softball for many years, including with local town teams and in the Sioux City Recreation League after graduating from high school.
Norman was a lifelong farmer in the Sloan, Iowa area, beginning his farming career in 1953. For thirty-two years, he was also a long-time hog producer, dedicating much of his life to agriculture and farming.
Norman served in the 174th–185th Iowa National Air Guard in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, from 1954 to 1964.
Norman Westergaard and Connie Larson were united into marriage June 14, 1956 at Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton. To this union three children were born. The couple later divorced.
Norman Westergaard and Marlene Taylor Andrew were united into marriage August 21, 1971 at the Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. From this union they raised three children. Marlene passed away April 22, 2004.
Norman joined Skien Lutheran Church in 1968 and remained a devoted member throughout his life. Beginning in 1972, he served the community as both Fairview Township Clerk and Trustee. He also dedicated more than forty years to serving on the church council, holding every position over the years. The church and the Albaton community were a very important part of Norman’s life.
Early in life, Norman enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and boating. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time at the 4 Seasons Health Club, where he made many lasting friendships. Throughout his entire life, he was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Cubs. Norman also generously donated more than twenty gallons of blood to the Siouxland Community Blood Bank.
Norman was always proud of his Danish and Swedish heritage. One of his cherished experiences was traveling back to the “old country,” Denmark, where he visited his sister, Inga along with many other relatives and friends. He was affectionately known as the “Albaton Great Dane”.
Survivors include his children, Nancy (Juan) Hernandez of Irvine, California, Debbie (Mark) Doran of Fredrick, Colorado, Mike (Teresa) Andrew of Anthon, Iowa, Marcia (Jay) Erickson of Windsor, Colorado, Patti (Dan) Witten of Whiting, Iowa, and Kris (Michelle) Westergaard of Sloan, Iowa; grandchildren, Sean (Morgan) Westergaard, Kelli (Casey) Sturgill, Noah (Hannah) Mast, Nicole (Jordan) Taylor, Ashley (Thomas Atherton) Andrew, Joshua (Lexie) Andrew, Shayla (Adam) Rodriguez, Kassey (Eric) Frazier, Sabina Hernandez, Benjamin Hernandez, Abigail Erickson, Kelsey (Ridge) Allvord and Klye Doran; great-grandchildren, Layla, Leo, Ava, Hollin, Moira, Lewis, Addisyn, Maisy, Beckham, and Harper; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene (Taylor) Westergaard; parents, Walter and Mildred (Johnson) Westergaard; parents-in-law, Myron and Evelyn (Wetrosky) Taylor; sister, Inga Westergaard; and brother-in-law, Larry Taylor.
