Michael Robert Johnson

Michael Robert Johnson, 65, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at his residence.

A memorial service will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the Onawa United Methodist Church, Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor David Godwin, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Michael’s obituary.  Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Michael Robert Johnson, born on July 22, 1959, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Robert and Phyllis “Elaine” (Woods) Johnson. He grew up in Onawa, Iowa, and graduated from West Monona High School.

Michael was an active and dedicated member of the Onawa Methodist Church, where he served faithfully on the church board for many years. He provided maintenance services including plumbing and electrical work for many years. Michael did this as part of his commitment to the church and its mission. His musical talent shone as he played the piano and organ for the church, a role he embraced for over twenty years with unwavering commitment.

Beyond his contributions to the church, Michael was a gifted cabinetmaker, creating beautiful works that included a case work wall with shelves, cabinets, and a unique wooden and glass hutch for his brother, Dennis’ home office, showcasing his craftsmanship and attention to detail. Michael loved practicing classical piano music. He could often be heard playing on visits to the family home in Onawa where his grand piano was located. Another one of Michael’s interests was genealogy. His passion for researching family history not only connected him to his roots but also allowed him to assist friends in uncovering their own family history.

He shared many cherished moments with his beloved mother, taking leisurely rides through the countryside on his Honda motorcycle. Together with his brother Dennis, the family traveled in their motor home, exploring destinations like Florida, Texas, and the Pacific coast to visit his Aunt Eileen and family.

Survivors include his brother, Dennis O. ( Betty ) Johnson of Brainerd, Minnesota; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Phyllis Johnson; and brother, Eric Lee Johnson.
