Mark Richard Witzel

Mark R. Witzel, 66, of Pisgah, Iowa passed away unexpectedly, Monday, December 22, 2025 at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 15, 2026 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Mapleton, Iowa with Reverend Nathan Peitsch, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Mark’s obituary. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 P.M. Friday, January 16, 2026 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa with Military Honors provided by the United States Marine Corps and American Legion Post #0403 of Van Meter, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

 Mark Richard was born May 4, 1959 in Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Hans and Lavone (Hasbrouck) Witzel. Mark proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for 24 years until his retirement on June 30, 2001. He graduated from the University of Texas, Naval Post Graduate School.

Mark loved gardening, woodworking, and farming, and he also took great interest in stocks, the Dallas Cowboys, and muscle cars.

Mark was the director of the Monona County Veterans Affairs office for several years.

Survivors include four sons, Christopher Witzel of Phoenix, Arizona, Benjamin Witzel of Davis, California, Matthew Witzel of Fallbrook, California, and Daniel (Emma) Witzel of Lake Elsinore, California; six grandchildren, Owen Witzel, Hudson Witzel, Reagan Witzel, Reese Witzel, Hayes Witzel, and Asher Witzel; five siblings, Carol (Bill) Pritchard of Mapleton, Iowa, David Witzel of Castana, Iowa, Donald (Deanna) Witzel of Danville, Illinois, Brian Witzel of Mapleton, Iowa, and Colleen (Jim) Musson of Danville, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Lavone Witzel.
