Marilyn Jean Van Houten

Marilyn Jean Van Houten, 79, of Whiting, Iowa, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2023, at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, due to a sudden medical condition.

A funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Skien Lutheran Church, Albaton, Iowa with Pastor Craig Bock, officiating. A recording of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Marilyn’s obituary. Burial will follow in the Fairview Township Cemetery, Albaton, Iowa. A visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday, January 30, 2023, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Marilyn Jean was born March 23, 1943, in Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Glen and Grace (Anderson) Swan. She attended school at Whiting and Sloan, and graduated from Sloan with the class of 1961. After graduation, Marilyn went on to Nettleton Business Training in Sioux City, Iowa.

Marilyn and Gaylen Van Houten were united into marriage May 26, 1968, at the Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton, Iowa, to this union one son was born, Bradley.

She worked at Sedgwick-Brennan Abstract for many years, and also helped Gaylen on the farm. Marilyn was an active member at the Skien Lutheran Church, which included the Ladies Aid.

Marilyn enjoyed photography, gardening, and her flowers. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.

Survivors include her husband, Gaylen Van Houten of Whiting, Iowa; child, Bradley (Brigitte) Van Houten of Ashland, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Hannah, Emma, and Aurelia Van Houten; two sisters, Margaret Copple of Sloan, Iowa, and Marlene (Mark) Choquette of Sloan, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Grace Swan; and brother-in-law, Wayne Copple.
