Lucille D. (Janis) Swenson was born September 17, 1939 in Omaha, Nebraska, at their family home to the parents of Marvin and Mary (Goldstedt) Janis. Lucille attended Oakdale Grade School and Westside High School.
Lucille was a very hard worker over the years and wore many different hats. She worked at various places including; a malt shop, factory, restaurant, and dry cleaners. Her longest standing job was at Walmart, where she worked for over thirty years. She was very proud of her work and loved to talk to people. Her last job was at a local gas station in Ute, Iowa, called Pronto. This is where Lou could talk to all the locals.
She was a very pleasant person to be around and very dedicated. Lou loved her family and friends very much. She loved to go out to the farm and check cows and watch her grandkids at cattle shows. Lou also enjoyed camping, her friends at Blue Lake, friends at church, playing cards with her family and friends in North Dakota, and her many phone calls from her sister Mary in Alaska. Often family would tease her about who was her favorite and her reply would always be “You’re all my favorite!” She cherished every moment she had with everyone. She took every chance she had to say, “Grandma is proud of you!”
Faith was very important to Lou. She was a faithful Christian all her life and enjoyed going to church on Sundays. Lou would even listen to the gospel on the radio. At the end when she no longer was able to attend, she would watch church on T.V.
Lucille touched many lives, even in her many stays at the hospital. The nursing staff loved her like family and gave her the nickname of “LuLu”. A nurse once told her, in her country it means “diamond” and her reply was, “Well I will keep it then!”
Lulu had a love for all things sports, no matter who was playing she would cheer for them. She would say they’re my team. LuLu was a true diamond and will be missed by all who had a chance to meet and get to know her.
Survivors include her children, Donna Halda of Villisca, Iowa, Marilyn Halda of Villisca, Iowa, Steve (Trudy) Swenson of Villisca, Iowa, Andy (Kristin) Swenson of Hatton, North Dakota, Danielle (Jeremy) Creese of Ute, Iowa; sister, Mary (Gary) Jensen of Sterling, Alaska; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Myron “Swede” Swenson; parents, Marvin and Mary (Goldstedt) Janis; son, William “Billy” Halda, Jr., and brother, Marvin (Maxine) Janis.
