Ken was born to Holger Alfred Hansen and Florence Irene Shafer at home in Hamilton County on September 20, 1933. He grew up on a farm attending Country School until the 6th grade and then town school from 7th through 12th graduating from Radcliffe High School in 1952. He drove the school bus during his junior and senior years.
He joined the Army in 1953 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was scheduled to go to Korea but the war ended one day before his departure. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He met Shirley Stoner through his cousin Martha who was Shirley’s best friend, and they eloped to the Little Brown Church in the Vale on October 18, 1955. To this union six children were born, Mark Kenneth, LeAnn Marie, Steven Lynn, Julie Ann, Sandra Kay, and Kelly Dean.
Ken worked for the DX Station in Webster City and then the couple moved to Iowa Falls, Iowa where he worked for Clean Towel. He also worked for REC in Jefferson, Iowa for six years before moving to Carroll, Iowa and worked for Allis Chalmers and then to Turin, Iowa where he continued to work for Allis Chalmers in Onawa, Iowa. He then started his own business of Hansen Electric, Heating, and Plumbing.
He served as the baseball coach for the Turin Tornadoes, served on the city council for many years, and was the Mayor of Turin for 28 years. His most enjoyable moments were spent with his family and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He usually never missed an event for them. He was a jokester and always had a joke or a story to tell. He would leave family Christmas to help somebody if their furnace quit or if they had an electric or plumbing problem and drove in many blizzards to help people for the same reason because that was the kind of guy he was.
Most people knew him as Gramps. Gramps is sure going to be missed. He took a lot of knowledge with him. He knew everything about everything, at least that is what we all thought!
Gramps is survived by daughter, Sandra Mortensen of Onawa, Iowa; son-in-law, Robert McClure of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Bobbie (Craig) Sherer of Onawa, Iowa, Shellie Nelson of Thurston, Nebraska, Michael McClure of Onawa, Iowa, Joshua (Krista) Henry of Omaha, Nebraska, Zachary Henry of Sioux City, Iowa, and Meghan (Ben Manning) Henry of Sioux City, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Xavier Sherer and Wyatt Sherer of Onawa, Iowa, Londyn Nelson of Wayne, Nebraska, Elijah Nelson of Omaha, Nebraska, Lauren Anderson of Sioux City, Iowa, Brendyn Recker of Thurston, Nebraska, Maliann and Ansen McClure of Hawaii, Nora McClure of Onawa, Iowa, Eleanor Henry of Omaha, Nebraska, Joplin Manning and Hazen Henry of Sioux City, Iowa; brother, Wilbur Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa; and sister, Ruth Cook of Iowa Falls, Iowa; sister, Clara Bell of Webster City, Iowa; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
