Joan Butler Obituary

Joan A. Butler, 88, of Soldier, Iowa, passed away, Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at CHI Health-Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy in Omaha, Nebraska, surrounded by family.

A funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 11, 2024, at the Soldier Lutheran Church, with Pastor Paul Coen, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Joan’s obituary. Burial will follow in the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier, Iowa. A visitation will be 4:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. Sunday, March 10, 2024, with a 6:00 P.M. prayer service at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments.

Joan Andree was born February 13, 1936, in Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Pauline (Reeder) Swenson. She attended Soldier High School and graduated with the class of 1954.

Joan and Glen Butler were united in marriage on December 16, 1954. To this union four children were born, Mike, Neal, Scott, and Penny.  Glen passed away on September 16, 1999.

She worked as a waitress for various restaurants, was a telephone operator, and worked for Hallett Materials as a scale house weigh master.

Joan enjoyed bird watching, rock collecting, bowling, dancing, yard work, and reading. She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. Joan enjoyed traveling to Arizona. She loved spending time with her family.

She was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church and was very active in WELCA. Joan was also a member of the Friends of Discovery.

Survivors include her children, Mike (Lora) Butler of Soldier, Iowa, Neal (Joyce) Butler of Mesa, Arizona, Scott (special friend Rhonda Ferris) Butler of Onawa, Iowa, and Penny (Steve) Mauch of Mapleton, Iowa; grandchildren, Maren (special friend Hershel Roach III) Butler, Nathan (special friend Ashley Mora) Butler, Emily (Mark) Sheetenhelm, Karlene Butler, Jessica (Donald) Mullin, Joshua Butler, Justin (Lora) Butler, Kyle (Heather) Mauch, Daniel (Sara) Mauch, Kalana (Ben) DeBlauw, and Marissa (Charlie) Lueth; many great-grandchildren and a couple great-great-grandchildren; brother, James Swenson of Mapleton, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Lucille Swenson of Larimore, North Dakota, and Paula Swenson of Soldier, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Glen Butler; parents, Andrew and Pauline (Reeder) Swenson; parents-in-law, George and Maude (Lovell) Butler; brothers, Myron Swenson, and Robert Swenson; sisters-in-law, Helene Swenson, and Doris Jepson; and brother-in-law, Tuffy Jepson.
