Helen “Grandma Wimpy” Ann Peterson, 76, of Danbury, Iowa passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa.
A funeral mass will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 10, 2022 at St. John Catholic Church, Onawa, Iowa with Father Michael Erpelding, officiating. Burial will follow in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. A visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, January 9, 2022 with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 P.M. at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Helen Ann was born June 21, 1945, the daughter of Herbert Andrew and Freda Mildred (Mathys) Shook. She grew up and attended school in Onawa, Iowa. Helen received her GED in 1972.
Helen was united in marriage to Charles Raymond Peterson, July 7, 1962 in Onawa, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Steve, Cheryl, Jeff, David, and Kathy. She enjoyed raising and caring for her children. Helen and Charles owned and operated the Rodney Bar “Wimpy’s” from 1982 – 1987. Charles passed away on December 10, 2000 in Smithland, Iowa. Helen owned and operated “Grandma Wimpy’s” restaurant in Smithland, Iowa from October 31, 2002 until she sold the business in 2007.
Wimpy loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing euchre, music, dancing, cooking, fishing, and going to the casino. She was a member of the Red Hat Society for many years. Grandma Wimpy was always looking to give people she loved, a hard time or a laugh.
She was of the Catholic Faith.
She is survived by her children, Steve (Jennifer) Peterson of Sibley, Iowa, Cheryl (Ron) Weber of Danbury, Iowa, Jeff Peterson and (special friend Angie Devries) of Rodney, Iowa, David (Jen) Peterson of Jacksonville, Illinois, and Kathy (Steve) Dewald of Onawa, Iowa; grandchildren, Tracy (Brittney) Peterson, Wyatt (Jessica) Peterson, Ashley (Brian) McCabe, Dustin (Erin) Weber, Travis Weber, Courtney (Jeff) Graham, Lacy (Claire) Smizer, Andrew Peterson, MacGyver Hlad, Gracie, Gunner, and Gatlin Peterson, Brent (Niki) Dewald, Jason (Jill) Dewald, and Josh (Heather) Dewald, Nick Melby, Erin (Zach) Cox, and Heather (John) Bonnes; great-grandchildren, Lane, Harley, Ashleyn, Matt, Gavin, Trent, Owen, Lathan, Larrah, Lela, Jaidyn, Charlie, Cherilynne, Lynne, Alisha, Ryan, Michael, Jackson, Joseph, JT, Braxton, Brayden, Addison, Brielle, Lilly, Dodge, Kole, Jaxson, Addyson, Dalsten, Todd, Jasper, Pennaelopi, and Julienne; sisters, Rita Harris and Patty Huff; sisters-in-law, Kay Shook, Sarah Shook, Ruth Cattlett, Anne Marie Bobier, and Mary Peterson; brothers-in-law, Jerry Peterson and Don (Susie) Peterson; Wimpy’s best friend and partner in crime, Charlotte Bell; many nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and numerous good friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Peterson; parents, Herbert and Freda (Mathys) Shook; parents-in-law, Axel and Della (Lyman) Peterson; granddaughter, Paige Weber; daughter-in-law, Deanna Peterson; brothers, Harold Shook, James Shook, Leo Shook, and Fred Shook; brothers-in-law, Norman Huff, Jim Peterson, Carl Peterson, and Kent Cattlett; and nephew, Robbie Harris.
Grandma Wimpy gave the gift of life to others through organ and tissue donation with the Iowa Donor Network.
