Harold Holverson Obituary

Harold Richard Holverson, 88, of Soldier, Iowa passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa.

A funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at the Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa with Pastor Paul Coen, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Harold’s obituary. Burial will follow in the Jordan Cemetery, Soldier, Iowa with Military Honors provided by the United States Marines and Grimsley – Thayer American Legion Post #502, of Castana, Iowa. A visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday, November 21, 2022 with a prayer service at 6:45 P.M. led by Darren C. E. Goslar at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel in Onawa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Harold was born July 28, 1934, rural Castana, Iowa, the son of Howard and Celia (Allen) Holverson. He graduated from Soldier High School with the class of 1953. Harold served in the United States Marines March 3, 1957 and was honorably discharged March 2, 1959. Harold was a member of the Grimsley – Thayer American Legion Post #502, of Castana, Iowa.

 Harold and Margaret Richards were married August of 1956 in Whiting, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Nancy and Steve. Margaret passed away on November 17, 2008.

In his early years, Harold was a grave digger for various cemeteries and his family helped mow the cemeteries including the Jordan Cemetery where his final resting place will be.

Harold worked as a school custodian and bus driver for the East Monona School and later for the West Harrison School District for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, trapping, cutting and splitting wood. Harold never met a stranger, always a friend. He faithfully met his friends almost every day for coffee at the Soldier Speedee Stop in Soldier. He fulfilled one of his dreams and got to take a trip to Alaska. Harold cherished all of his animals, especially his cats and dogs.

Survivors include his children; Nancy (Mike) Melby of Soldier, Iowa and Steve (Cheryl) Holverson of Hornick, Iowa; grandchildren, Kyle (Courtney) Allen, Kelli Beedle, Jessica (Christian) Keck, and Piper Holverson; five great-grandchildren, Morgan, Aaron, and Kate Beedle, Addison and Charlotte Allen; brother-in-law, John Collison; sister-in-law, Linda Peterson; special friend, Nancy Smart of Elk City, Idaho; and his sidekick dog, Cheeto; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Richards) Holverson; parents, Howard and Celia (Allen) Holverson; parents-in-law, Forest and Sophie (Bjorklund) Richards; brother, Skip Holverson; sister, Mary Collison; niece, Angie Holverson; nephew, John Collison, Jr.; and son-in-law, Jerry Bair in 2008.
