George Patrick “Pat” Weiland, 69, of Decatur, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at his home, outside of Decatur, Nebraska, surrounded by family.
A funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 22, 2024, at the First Lutheran Church, South Sioux City, Nebraska, with Pastor Patti Meyer, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with George’s obituary. Following the funeral service there will be a luncheon held at the church. Burial will be 5:30 P.M. Monday, July 22, 2024, in the Blue Hill Cemetery, Blue Hill, Nebraska. A visitation will be 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, July 21, 2024, at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
George Patrick was born April 27, 1955, the son of George and Delores (Strege) Weiland, in Pierre, South Dakota. He grew up in Pierre, South Dakota, Fremont and Millard, Nebraska; and Worthington, Minnesota. George graduated from Worthington Senior High in 1973. After graduation he attended Peru State College and earned his teaching degree in Physical Education in 1979.
His first job as a teacher was in 1980, at Bushnell, Nebraska. While teaching there he met the love of his life, Beverly Toepfer. He was only able to complete one year of teaching there, because the school had closed. During the years of dating Bev, George drove straight truck for B and R out of Worthington, Minnesota. He always made sure to spend time with Bev, even if it was a short visit. On June 30, 1984, George and Beverly were united into marriage at Blue Hill, Nebraska. After being married the happy couple decided to move to Macy, Nebraska, where they both taught at Omaha Nation Public Schools. George taught at Omaha Nation Public Schools for thirty-five years and retired in May of 2021.
George was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, Nebraska. He served on the Church Council and was a past Sunday School Teacher. George was a member of the Nebraska State Education Association, past Elkhorn District President, and helped with the Burt County 4-H.
During his life he had a passion for umpiring girls fast pitch softball, he umpired for twenty plus years. He umpired with his father, good friend Wayne, and daughter Ruth. He had a great passion for umpiring softball. His summers were spent on the softball field. He even got to umpire a Nebraska State Softball Tournament.
George loved spending time with his family and wife. In January of 1991 his daughter, Ruth Elaine Weiland was born. Then in April of 1995 his son, William Russell Weiland was born. The happy family moved to an acreage outside of Decatur, Nebraska. He loved doing things with his children and wife. He was always there to help Ruth and William with their 4-H projects or even gave them a piece of advice. On May 18, 2019, George gained a loving daughter-in-law, Ashley. With this marriage William and Ashley blessed George with three grandchildren, Tucker Hanson, Maya Weiland, and Brynlee Weiland. He loved his grandchildren unconditionally and would do anything for them. George enjoyed spending time with his girls.
Survivors include his two children, Ruth Weiland, and William (Ashley) Weiland; grandchildren, Maya and Brynlee Weiland; mother, Delores Weiland; sister, Lenai Engler; brother, Mike (Gynelle) Weiland; sisters-in-law, Joanne Peper, Shelley (Jack) Moles, and Rhonda Wickman; brother-in-law, Duane Laudenklos; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly (Toepfer) Weiland; father, George W. Weiland; parents-in-law, Eddy and Ruth Toepfer; grandson, Tucker Hanson; sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Merle) Osgood, and Kayrn Laudenklos; and brother-in-law, Steven Engler.
Memorials in George’s memory may be directed to the family for future designation.
