Gary D. Derrick, 80, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa passed away Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa, surrounded by his family.
A funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 3, 2025 at the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa with Dr. Emery Killian, officiating. The family requests those in attendance to please wear casual clothing. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Gary’s obituary. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Marine Corps and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Gary Devoe was born July 15, 1944 in Canadian, Texas, the son of Lindle “Bud” and Glendora (Arney) Derrick. He attended kindergarten through 9th grade in Texas. The family moved to Onawa, Iowa where he finished out his schooling. Gary served in the United States Marine Corps from September 5, 1962 until his honorable discharge October 28, 1966. After serving in the military Gary worked for Terra Chemicals for fifteen years. He then worked for five different nuclear power plants doing procedure writing in Kansas, Ohio, Illinois, and Nebraska. He retired from the Omaha Public Power District where it was operating in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska.
Gary and Betty Mercer were united into marriage June 21, 1964 in Onawa, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Tony and Julie.
Gary loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved family gatherings, especially all of the food and homemade ice cream. Some of Gary’s hobbies were traveling, fishing, bowling, and gambling.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-one years, Betty Derrick of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; his children, Tony (Kristin) Derrick of Sioux City, Iowa, and Julie (Ken) Weiland of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren, Jesse (Alyssa) Derrick, Jaimee Derrick, Gabe (Suzuka) Simpson, Colton Weiland, and Britton Weiland; four great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Remington, Nash, and Brooks Derrick; brother, Tim (Karen) Derrick of Prosser, Washington; sister, Linda (Ted) Dreckman of Le Mars, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Glendora (Arney) Derrick; and brother, Alfred Derrick.
