Dennis Deuane was born August 7, 1947, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Delbert and Betty (Graham) McQueen. He grew up there, and after high school worked until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive until his honorable discharge in 1968. Later he continued his education at Western Iowa Tech, majoring in Electronics Communication. Dennis and Linda Fleenor were united in marriage on January 23, 1970, in Sioux City, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born, Alice in 1975 and Megan in 1979.

Dennis and Linda moved to Soldier, Iowa, when Dennis accepted the position of telephone manager for Soldier Valley Telephone. He later worked at the elevator, then for the Iowa DOT as an equipment operator and roadside coordinator for 25 years.

A member of Soldier Lutheran Church, Dennis served on the church council for many years. He was also a member of the VFW, Soldier Fire Department, and American Legion. He was a VA commissioner, DNR Hunter Safety Instructor, and served on the East Monona School Board.

A nature lover since childhood, Dennis enjoyed scouting as much as hunting. Fishing was his favorite, especially ice fishing. He always teased that he needed to take a big guy along to head out on the ice first. Dennis was a master gardener and canned hundreds of quarts of pasta sauce, salsa, and tomatoes, sharing the bounty of his beautiful garden with family and friends.

An animal lover all his life, Dennis always found a place for homeless cats and dogs. Neighborhood squirrels and birds were always well fed, and not even raccoons and possums in the neighborhood went hungry.

Dennis loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved granddaughters. His job as Papa was his favorite ever. He was known for his storytelling and jokes. If asked, does anyone have any questions, he’d say, “How come they don’t make grape ice cream?” For all who knew and loved Dennis, we are certain he was “JUST about perfect.”

Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-four years, Linda McQueen of Soldier, Iowa; children, Alice McQueen of Whiting, Iowa and Megan (Jim) Most of Sioux City, Iowa; two grandchildren, Olive and Hazel Most of Sioux City, Iowa; brothers, David McQueen of Belvedere, California and Joseph Klinkiewicz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Julie Fleenor of Moville, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, beloved neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Delbert McQueen and mother, Betty Graham; step-father, Art Klinkiewicz; step-mother, Elsie McQueen; parents-in-law, William “Bill” and Florence “Toots” Fleenor; brother-in-law, Robert “Bob” Fleenor; and beloved cousin, Steve McQueen.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Soldier Fire Department or Harrison County Humane Society of Iowa.
