Beverly J. Purchase was born on June 13, 1947, in Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Bruce and Evelyn (Hime) Purchase. She lived with her family in Blencoe for seven years, moving to Onawa in 1954. She was born with health issues and fought the effects of osteochondrodystrophy (bone, cartilage and muscle disorder) all her life. In spite of this she excelled all through her school years- not only academically but physically with many steps in Onawa Jr. and Senior high. (No ADA laws back then.) She graduated with honors from West Monona High School in 1965. Her next stop was Nettleton Business College in Sioux City, graduating in 1966.
Immediately after graduation from business school she went to work at Burgess Health Center as a bookkeeper. (They knew a good worker when they saw one!) She worked there as Director of Finance for many years until health problems forced her to retire in 1992. She had many good friends at Burgess and the hospital always held a special place in her heart.
Beverly was a member of the First Congregational Church of Onawa. After retirement she volunteered in the Auxiliary gift shop at Burgess. She was the gift shop treasurer and served on the Hospital Auxiliary Board. She devoted many hours to the Auxiliary.
She joined her mom as a resident of Diamond Heights apartment complex and had a reputation for getting to the proper source of any problem when issues arose in the building.
Bev was family historian for the Wilbur and Bertha Hime family and organized many of their family reunions. She enjoyed working on family genealogy. She was skilled at writing poetry and prose and she had several of her works published. Photography was another hobby she excelled at. She was a meticulous bookkeeper.
Beverly enjoyed having fun, especially with family members. She loved to dance, learning by standing on her dad’s feet as a child. She enjoyed visiting, especially about things of the past. She disliked robo-callers (threatened to shoot them), noisy kids and bad weather. Whatever obstacle she encountered she could usually find a way to overcome it. She will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Survivors include numerous cousins who loved her dearly.
Hope there’s plenty of dill pickles and ketchup in heaven Tootsie!
